For Parents

This is where you can find useful information and tips on using 'Yes I Speak English' and learn more about the benefits of learning English.

Why Learn English?

English is spoken in more countries than any other language in the world and the number of people who want to learn English as a second language is growing every year. Many countries have recognized that English is the ‘global language’ and have included it in their school programs.

By encouraging children to learn English ahead of any school program, 'Yes I Speak English' delivers a major advantage that will carry on for the rest of their lives.

Young children can learn a language quicker and easier than adults and it would be a wasted opportunity not to use a child’s natural abilities during the years when their brains are most receptive.

While 'Yes I Speak English' is designed for pre-school children this series will also benefit children up to the age of 8.

More information on the importance of English as a 'global lingua franca' can be found in our FAQ section under Benefits of Early Language Learning ... look for ... Is English really the most popular language in the world?up arrow

The Learning Method

English is the only language used throughout the series. This learning method is called ‘Language Immersion' and is a method of teaching a second language in which the target language is used as a means of instruction.

Early language learners who are surrounded or ‘immersed’ in a second language are more likely to be able to speak the new language without any accent and also develop better comprehension skills.

This is the natural way young children acquire a language.up arrow

Early Language Learning

  • During the first six years of life the brain is changing more from learning and acquiring language skills than on any of the other cognitive skills. Children are born with the natural ability to imitate pronunciation and work out any language for themselves, without the need for the conscious study of grammar-based rules, which is why learning is quicker and easier at this age.
  • Children are much better at learning languages than adults and are able to acquire a foreign language much easier and faster if they begin at an early age.
  • The brain has been described as a ‘super-sponge’ for children up to the age of 12. During this period the foundations of all the important characteristics, such as attitudes, vision, thinking, aptitudes and language, are laid down. After this age learning requires more of a conscious effort and becomes more difficult.
  • Children have a natural capacity to learn multiple languages without getting confused because the brain develops a natural ability to separate one language from another. In some countries, such as Switzerland, children learn to speak 3 or 4 languages from an early age.

Benefits of Learning a New Language

Research has shown that learning a second language at an early age has a positive effect on intellectual growth and leaves students with more flexibility in thinking, greater sensitivity to language, and better listening skills.

Children who have an early start to second language learning that continues through high school and college will be able to achieve a greater level of fluency.

Benefits that have been associated with children who speak an additional language:

  • Improved overall school and college performance
  • Improved problem-solving skills
  • Improved knowledge of native-language structure and vocabulary
  • Increased income earning opportunities
  • Lifelong ability to communicate with people from other countriesup arrow

2. Playing the Interactive Games

  • Many consumer DVD players are not designed for optimal speed when playing interactive games. Our DVDs can be played using a computer with a DVD drive and this will allow for a faster interactive experience. (A computer is not a requirement for this DVD)
  • We recommend the use of a keyboard if you are using a computer. Only the Arrow Keys (left, right, up, down) and the Enter key are required to navigate the DVD.

3. Use the Subtitles

  • English Subtitles are available for all the Chapters and can be activated using your DVD remote control.
  • The Subtitles can be used to stimulate an interest in reading English.

4. Play an active role in the learning process

  • We encourage parents to play an active role in their child’s learning.
  • For example, if you notice that your child is not responding when asked to ‘say the words with me’ or ‘sing along with us’, offer encouragement to follow all the spoken instructions. Your encouragement and enthusiasm will improve your child’s learning experience.
