Are bilingual children really smarter?

    European Commission

  • Research indicates that children who are exposed to a foreign language at a young age achieve higher levels of cognitive development at an earlier age.
  • The collective evidence suggests that the bilingual experience improves the brain’s so-called executive function — a command system that directs the attention processes that we use for planning, solving problems and performing various other mentally demanding tasks.
  • Language learners show greater cognitive flexibility, better problem solving and higher order thiniking skills.
  • Foreign language learners have better listening skills and sharper memories than their peers who only speak one language.

What are the Benefits of Early Language Learning?

Improved problem solving

Scientific American
  • Children who know two languages more easily solve problems.
The ability to speak a second language isn’t the only thing that distinguishes bilingual people from their monolingual counterparts—their brains work differently, too.
Research has shown, for instance, that children who know two languages more easily solve problems that involve misleading cues.
A new study published in Psychological Science reveals that knowledge of a second language—even one learned in adolescence—affects how people read in their native tongue.
  • The findings suggest that after learning a second language, people never look at words the same way again."

Faster language learning, improved mother tongue skills

European Commission
  • " Bringing very young children into contact with foreign languages may result in faster language learning, improved mother tongue skills, and better performance in other areas. That is why EU education ministers support the teaching of at least two foreign languages from a very early age."
  • " As well as laying the foundations for later learning, early language learning influences attitudes towards other languages and cultures – reason enough for the various Commission initiatives to promote it and support further research. "

Enhanced comprehension, expression and communication skills

Eurydice
  • " Opening children’s minds to multilingualism and different cultures is a valuable exercise in itself that enhances individual and social development and increases their capacity to empathise with others.
  • ELL (English Language Learning) activities in pre-primary settings can be an enriching experience and bring considerable benefits. They are instrumental in enhancing competences such as comprehension, expression, communication and problem-solving, enabling children to interact successfully with peers and adults. They can increase powers of concentration and strengthen self-confidence.
  • As young children also become aware of their own identity and cultural values, ELL can shape the way they develop their attitudes towards other languages and cultures by raising awareness of diversity and of cultural variety, hence fostering understanding and respect. "
